From Jan Brandt’s childhood spent on a farm, punctuated with fantastical visits to arboretums and botanical gardens, to the many hours now spent tending her garden, her hand made fiber components that form site specific installations have grown out of a lifelong fascination with the seasons and growth. Brandt is inspired by the rich, sensory experience of gardening and her memories of the four seasons spent on the farm-the vast collection of plant-life, the heaviness of the sweet floral fragrance mingled with the earthy scent of soil. She aims to transform a gallery space with brightly saturated colors and contrasting textures. Components of various sizes and palettes serve as specimens within this ecosystem, inviting closer observation. Paintings of various sizes serve as specimens within this ecosystem, inviting closer observation. Their surfaces, marked with dimensional fabric paint, matte chalk paint, and glitter, reveal depth and form composed of layered linework. The adjacent colors are made to be mixed in the viewer’s eye, echoing the textural and colorful components of plant life. To develop this layered visual vocabulary, Brandt has drawn on a diverse history of floral motifs, including the carefully observed details in 18th century botanical drawings, the patterning of Jacobean tapestries, and the flat abstraction of Swedish and Japanese floral design.
